Senior Backend Engineer

Salary range: $125,000 – $225,000

This role is ideal for a senior backend engineer who thrives in building reliable, scalable, and secure software systems. You will support the design, development, and deployment of backend services for complex technical environments across government and commercial customers.

You will work closely with cross functional engineering, operations, and customer facing teams to deliver production grade software that is maintainable, secure, and aligned with customer needs.

Key Responsibilities

Backend Software Development

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services using C++ and Python.
• Build scalable, reliable, and secure software components that support complex applications.
• Develop clean APIs, service interfaces, and backend workflows.
• Improve performance, reliability, and maintainability of existing systems.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve technical issues across development and deployment environments.

Systems Engineering and Integration

• Support integration of backend services with internal and external systems.
• Work with distributed systems, service oriented architectures, and microservices.
• Collaborate with technical teams to define requirements, interfaces, and implementation approaches.
• Contribute to architecture discussions and technical design decisions.
• Ensure software components are well documented, testable, and maintainable.

Cloud Native and DevOps Support

• Containerize applications and services using Docker.
• Support deployment and management of services in Kubernetes environments.
• Work with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, logging, monitoring, and observability tools.
• Support cloud, hybrid, and on premises deployment models as needed.
• Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams to improve deployment reliability and repeatability.

Quality, Security, and Documentation

• Write clean, maintainable, and production ready code.
• Follow secure software development practices.
• Create and maintain technical documentation for services, APIs, workflows, and deployment processes.
• Participate in code reviews, testing, and continuous improvement efforts.
• Support compliance, security, and operational requirements as needed.

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in C++ and Python.
• Experience designing, building, and maintaining backend services.
• Experience with Docker and containerized application development.
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar orchestration technologies.
• Experience with microservices, APIs, and distributed software systems.
• Strong understanding of Linux based development and deployment environments.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and communicate solutions clearly.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

• Experience with simulation, modeling, or other complex technical software systems.
• Experience supporting defense, national security, federal government, or mission critical programs.
• Familiarity with DoD software delivery environments, security expectations, or stakeholder workflows.
• Experience with high performance systems, real time systems, event driven architectures, or large scale data processing.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps automation, infrastructure as code, and observability tools.
• Familiarity with security requirements such as ATOs, FedRAMP, STIGs, or DoD security protocols.
• Active Security Clearance or the ability to obtain one.
